Cross Stitch Size Calculator: Finished Design Size

This cross stitch size calculator answers one question: how big will the stitched design be? Enter the stitch count and see the finished size on every common count, with no cutting margin. To work out the cloth to cut, use the fabric to cut calculator.

Enter values and press Calculate.

Formula

Finished size (inches) = stitches ÷ stitches per inch. On Aida stitched over one, stitches per inch equals the fabric count. On evenweave or linen stitched over two, divide the count by 2 (28 count over two = 14 stitches per inch). Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres.

Example

A 140 × 100 stitch design on 14 count Aida is 10 × 7.14 inches (25.4 × 18.1 cm). On 18 count it shrinks to 7.78 × 5.56 inches.

Choosing a count

Lower counts give bigger stitches that are easier to see. Higher counts give a smaller, finer finish. See the fabric count chart.

Frequently asked questions

How big is 100 stitches on 14 count Aida?

100 ÷ 14 = 7.14 inches, about 18.1 cm.

Is the finished size the same as the fabric size?

No. Fabric needs extra margin on every side for framing or hooping, commonly 2 to 3 inches. Use the fabric to cut calculator for that.
