How to calculate cross stitch fabric size
Every cross stitch chart tells you its stitch count, for example 120w × 90h. The fabric count is how many stitches fit in one inch: 14-count Aida gives 14 stitches per inch, 18-count gives 18. On evenweave or linen you usually stitch over two threads, so 28-count linen works like 14-count Aida. The over-two fabric calculator is for that case only.
Design size (inches) = stitch count ÷ stitches per inch
Fabric size = design size + 2 × margin
Worked example
A 140 × 100 stitch design on 14-count Aida is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide and 100 ÷ 14 = 7.14 inches tall. With a 3-inch margin on every side, cut the fabric to 16 × 13.14 inches, so about 16 × 13.5 inches after rounding up. On 28-count evenweave stitched over two, the size is exactly the same. Over one, it would be half as big.
How much margin should I leave?
Most designers recommend 2 to 3 inches (5–8 cm) on each side. Leave 3 inches or more if you plan to frame the piece professionally or use a scroll frame, and 1–2 inches for small ornaments or hoop finishes. If you're unsure, err on the larger side, because spare fabric can be trimmed later but you can't add it back.
Common fabric counts
| Fabric | Stitches per inch | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 11 | Beginners, kids, bold designs |
| 14-count Aida | 14 | The most popular all-rounder |
| 16-count Aida | 16 | Finer detail, a slightly smaller result |
| 18-count Aida | 18 | Detailed, compact pieces |
| 28-count evenweave (over 2) | 14 | Smooth look, the same size as 14-count Aida |
| 32-count linen (over 2) | 16 | Heirloom and sampler work |
Tips before you cut
- Measure the fabric twice and cut along a single thread line to keep it square.
- Fabric counts vary slightly between manufacturers, so add an extra half-inch if the fit is tight.
- Overcast or tape the edges so they don't fray while you stitch.
- Mark the center by folding the fabric in half both ways, and start stitching from the center of the chart.
Planning for a frame or hoop
If you already own a frame, work backwards. Take the frame opening, subtract the mat border you want, and check that the finished design size in the table fits inside. For a hoop finish, the hoop should be at least 1 inch larger than the design, and the fabric needs another 2 inches on top of that to wrap around the back.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert stitch count to inches?
Divide the number of stitches by the fabric count. For example, 112 stitches on 14-count Aida is 112 ÷ 14 = 8 inches.
When do I tick over two on this calculator?
Tick it for evenweave or linen, where each cross covers two threads. The effective count is half the fabric count: 28-count over two equals 14 stitches per inch. For that case alone, use the over-two fabric calculator.
How much extra fabric do I need for framing?
Leave at least 3 inches (about 8 cm) on every side for professional framing, which adds 6 inches to both the width and the height.
Is 14-count or 18-count better?
14-count is easier to see and stitch and is the most common choice. 18-count gives finer detail and a smaller finished piece.
How do I convert to centimeters?
Multiply inches by 2.54. The calculator shows both units automatically.
